Why is bubble gum not allowed in Singapore?

When I was a child, I ate bubble gums. However, the government discovered that many people spat the gums onto the floor. Workers were needed to remove them and they left ugly marks behind. Some people even put bubble gums on the lift buttons and under the seats of MRT trains. It was very unsightly to see bubble gums everywhere! Just try imagining having bubble gums on your skirts, along the corridor of your house... Therefore the government decided to ban the consumption of bubble gums so that Singapore could continue to be a clean and green garden city.

My son is back

My son came back on Monday night with loads of dirty clothes mixed with clean clothes. Are you boys like him, mixing clean clothes with dirty clothes? The smell of sweat was overwhelming.

He spent all his Australian dollars. He did not buy that many things, only 1 soccer ball, 1 wallet, 2 soft toys, 1 pair of slippers, 1 shirt and 1 packet of sweets. He spent most of his money on food. His brother was a little disappointed. When he went to India last year, he bought his elder brother some things. However, they can share the Adidas soccer ball.

According to my son he enjoyed the aquatic sports most. He was also the champion goal kicker. He competed with the locals and came in second for the 3000-m race. He stayed with a family there for two days and for the rest of the trip he stayed in a hostel near the sea.

Samantha seems to be enjoying herself in Hong Kong. Are the rest of you enjoying yourselves?

My son

I just came back from the airport. My elder son just left for Adelaide at 2350. He will be there till 8 Dec. He has been looking forward to the training trip. When we were at the airport, we realised that he had the smallest luggage. I praised for travelling light. He is going there for training, not man hunt!

Just in case some of you do not know, he will be 15 soon and he takes part in cross country and track and field. He did well in this year's national cross country championships. Individually, he emerged third and as a team, they came in second. I hope he will continue to do well.

He will be competing with the locals there. It will be a good experience. I hope he will enjoy his trip and make new friends.

Are you going on a holiday? I will be going to KL this week for 4 days. I am bringing my mum, therefore we cannot go far. I will blog again when I come back.

Enjoy your holidays but don't waste them. :)

How are you?

Hello! Please don't ask me whether I will be teaching 5.2 or 5.3! I don't know. Are you sure you still want me to teach you after one whole year of me breathing down your neck? Anyway, just enjoy your holidays.

Recycling is essential as many of the things we throw away can be reused. To help you with the reflection, I have listed some questions below:

1. What do you understand by 'recycling'?
2. Why is it necessary to recycle things?
3. What are the various ways in which things can be recycled?
4. Do you practise recycling?
5. If so, what do you recycle? How do you recycle the materials?
6. Do you think the school is doing enough in recycling?
7. What can the school do to help in the recycling process?
8. What message would you tell your friends and classmates about recycling?

Write your reflection soon. I am anxiously waiting to read your response.

The Singapore Flyer

Last Thursday, my family and I went on the Flyer for the first time. There were very few people, no queue at all. I "flew" for free while my family members managed to get a discount of 25%. Even with the discount, I had to pay about $60. I think the price was and still is too steep.

Furthermore, there were insufficient commentaries, just one or two lines when we were at the highest point and one or two more lines when we landed. Some people even missed these few lines. They could have some light background music. To me, it is not that high. I could see the F1 grand stand, the floating platform where National Day celebration was held, some tall buildings belonging to big banks, some hotels and others. My son could not locate our house even though we can see the Flyer from our house on a clear day every day. My younger son was so bored that after ten minutes, he started grumbling and lying on one of the two benches in the Flyer!

There is still much room for improvement. Well, to increase ridership, something must be done.
You may want to go for a ride when things are better. However, you may have to pay more.
I am very sorry. I cannot remember the charges. Find out yourself...

Computer Games

Hi Everyone,

There has been a lot of discussions about students spending a lot of time playing computer games. In this week, I would like you to reflect on this issue. If you spend a lot of time playing computer games, you will have no problem giving your views. However, for those who do not play computer games, you are encouraged to give your opinions too. To help you in writing your reflection, I have listed some questions below:
1. Do you play computer games? If you do, why do you do so? If not, why are you not doing so?
2. What computer game/s do you play?
3. Why are you attracted to the computer game?
4. Do you think many students play computer games? Why do you think they do so?
5. How many hours do you spend playing computer games in one week?
6. Do you think playing computer games will affect your studies? Please explain.
7. Are you aware that people can be addicted to computer games? If so, what are you doing about it?

Hope to read your response soon.

Blogging competition

Hi everyone,
There will be a school based blogging competition. It is not compulsory. If you are interested in entering the competition, from now till next term week 5, you will have to blog regularly. However, please blog wisely. Be kind and don't offend others. To increase your readership, you may want to add some pictures of yourself, your family, your friends or the places you have been. You may also want to do a review of the movies or TV programmes you have watched. You have to keep in mind what I have taught you about cyberwellness : netiquette, cyberbullying and copyright. Well, happy blogging. See you on Monday.

National Day Parade

Hi everyone! I thought the parade was going to be cancelled because of the downpour. I was on my way back from the supermarket. When I reached my house, the rain stopped. I realised that the parade continued inspite of the rain. If you were at the parade, would you stay on when it started to rain heavily? I could see fireworks from my house. I think it was not as beautiful as those of the past. What do you think? Anyway, enjoy your weekend. :)

National Day Celebration

I was so glad to see everyone of you in school today. None of you stayed at home. I hope you will have an enjoyable weekend. However, please do not forget to do your homework.

Dear Samantha and Xin Yi,
You had forgotten to hand in yesterday's homework this morning. You had also forgotten to collect today's homework from the pigeon hole. :( How??

Art appreciation

Today you learnt about how to appreciate and compare art pieces better. You may want to continue to do so on your own. Just focus on the following:
1. contrast in lines
2. contrast in colours
3. contrast in size
4. contrast in texture
5. contrast in light
6. contrast in shape

If I am free, I will touch on other aspects. I hope that through such lessons, you will learn to see art using different "eyes". :)

Copyright

Hi Everyone,
This week, you will reflect on what you have learnt about 'copyright'. In order to help you with your reflection, I have put up some questions:

1. What is 'copyright'?
2. Give some examples of resources that have copyright.
3. Why do you think it is wrong to infringe on the copyright of others?
4. What do you have to do if you want to use the materials of others?
5. What may happen if you use the materials of others without their permission?
6. Have you seen others infringing on the copyright of others? What did they do?
7. What can you do to make sure that you do not infringe on the copyright of others?

In order to understand the issues of copyright, you might want to check this link:http://www.nyp.edu.sg/NYPStudents/pdfs/FAQs_on_copyrights.pdfI am eagerly waiting to read your response.

Have a happy weekend.

A trip to the Science Centre

Today we went to the Science Centre to have a lab lesson on light. We had a very young presenter. I am sad to say that all of you could have enjoyed the lesson if you were better behaved. :( Poor Shaqil's mum! She had to tolerate noise pollution! I am planning for another trail for all the P4 pupils. I am just wandering whether you are interested in going. May be I should consider only taking some of you... I don't want you to embarrass yourselves, your parents and our school. :( Think about it...

Light and Shadow

Today we observed how the shadow of a beach umbrella changes over a 24-hour period. Some of you tried arranging the towel at specific times of the day. Some were properly shaded while others' ice cream melted. Christian was great. He was the only who managed to place the towel at the right position! Well done Christian! I have created a link here. Just click on the title and you can carry out the activity again. Happy learning!

Teachers' Day Audition

This afternoon was the audition. Those that signed up earlier came for the audition. However, we had three new entries. Most of them took part in groups or pairs. Some were very shy while others were full of confidence. P4 teachers were busy discussing the results of the audition while I headed for the Science Room to conduct my remedial lesson for some P5 pupils. Therefore I still do not know the results. Tomorrow I shall find out from the teachers.
